About Us:
“Who are you and what do you do?” is the familiar opening yell at every Beaver Colony
meeting. To answer this question, we are the 1st Hammonds Plains Group Committee, a
collection of volunteers who govern and coordinate Scouting at 1st Hammonds Plains, one
of the many Groups that collectively form the World Organization of the Scout Movement
(WOSM).

Where does my child fit into the WOSM?

Since the organization of WOSM is very complex, here's a description of where your child
fits
among its millions of members:

- Each Youth is a member of a Section. At 1st Hammonds Plains, we have six active
sections:
1. 2 Beaver Colonies (ages 5-7);
2. 2 Cub Packs (ages 8-10);
3. Scout Troop (ages 11-14, with option to remain until 16); and
4. Venture Company (ages 14-17)

- Each Section together make up the 1st Hammonds Plains Group.
- 1st Hammonds Plains and four other local Groups form the Basin Lakes Zone.
- Basin Lakes, together with five other Zones, form the Halifax Area.
- All of the Areas in the province form the Nova Scotia Council.
- Together with the other Councils across the country, form Scouts Canada, a member of
the WOSM.

Scouts Canada, the country’s leading youth organization, offers seven
challenging programs for boys, girls and youth age 5-26 in thousands of individual groups
in most cities and towns across Canada. Over 74,000 young people enjoy Scouts
Canada’s programs, which are provided by 23,000 caring and dedicated volunteers.
Scouts Canada’s national office is located in Ottawa.

Our Mission, Principles and Practices

To contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the
Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as
individuals and play a constructive role in society.

Heros Among Us

1st Hammonds Plains Scouter Awarded The
Bronze Cross
Bronze Cross Heroes (For gallantry with moderate risk)

Everyone knows one. That special person who makes you feel better about yourself, encourages you
through the tough spots, or inspires you as a role model. We call them heroes. In comic books they
wear masks and tight clothing — in Scouting, they are the everyday people who act as leaders and
mentors to adults and children alike.

The Bronze Cross Award was issued between August 28, 2008 and April 2, 2009 to members of
Scouting who have performed acts of service and bravery to assist others.

Aaron Ross MacIntyre
Aaron is commended for his selfless act of donating a kidney to a person in need despite the
significant risk this meant to his own health. His decision reflects courage and great strength of
character.

Aaron has been selected to represent those who have received their Bronze Cross over the past
number of years in Canada.

A National Awards Ceremony and Reception will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at
2:00 p.m. in the Senate Chamber on Parliament Hill. The Senate Chamber will serve as an excellent
venue for this prestigious event. This event is being held in conjunction with the 60th World
Baden-Powell Fellowship Event and will therefore include Scouting supporters from around the world.
